As London’s living costs continue to rise and price people out of the area, more and more of us are looking across the country for other job solutions. In August, the jobs available in the construction industry reached a massive 93,500. With good wages and lower living costs, these five cities are the UK’s best options for work in the construction industry outside of London.
Approximate jobs available: 2,401
Average salary: £36,930
Manchester has the highest number of construction vacancies available, more than double that of Reading, the fifth highest city. Manchester is often described as ‘the London of the north’, but anyone who has spent time there will know that these two cities are nothing alike. Manchester offers excellent entertainment, culture, and housing in an increasingly modern environment where the young and old alike are at home. The lifestyle in Manchester is less hectic than London, and with excellent transport links around Greater Manchester, there is always something to do.
Approximate jobs available: 1,685
Average salary: £38,130
Bristol has the second highest average salary of all five cities, and while it may not be the most obvious location on the list, it’s not one to ignore. In 2017, Bristol was named the best place to live in Britain in the Sunday Times ‘Best Places to Live Guide’. National Geographic named Bristol as Europe’s trendiest city, in a list of 18 must-see destinations in 2018. Bristol was the only British destination to make it onto the list.
Approximate jobs available: 1,625
Average salary: £38,842
Birmingham pipped Bristol to the post, coming in with the highest average salary of all five cities. Research carried out by think tank Demos found that Birmingham is the most rapidly improving city in the country to live and work. It has falling unemployment and a wave of regeneration projects underway, perfect for those looking for jobs in construction. The research from Demos took into consideration work-life balance, inequality and health, as well as income levels in 42 UK cities.
Approximate jobs available: 1,312
Average salary: £34,437
With a healthy number of construction jobs available, Leeds comes in fourth. With one of the lower average salaries of the five cities, Leeds still has a lot to offer. Rent prices are 164.43% lower than in London. The cost of living is massively lower than London. You get a lot more for your money in Yorkshire than you do in London.
Approximate jobs available: 910
Average salary: £36,442
Coming in fifth is Reading. Reading has the lowest number of jobs available but has a higher average salary than Leeds. Despite being fifth on the list for construction, generally Reading is an excellent place in the UK to live and work. It has been rated 7th in the UK on a list of the Best places to make a living in 2018. London took the top sport for salaries, but the enormous costs of living crippled its success.
If you’re looking for work in construction, these are the just some of the places you could consider. There’s a whole world outside London and the construction industry up and down the country is looking for a diverse range of people to help fill the massive skills gap.
