We are passionate about trying to help the environment wherever and however we can, so Green Commute Initiative is a great way for us to expand this outside our company. By encouraging our employees to cycle to work rather than drive, we are helping to not only reduce our company carbon footprint on the planet, but that of individuals too. As more and more of us take part in Green Commute initiative it has also enabled us to start-up company bike rides, just for fun or for charity! Did you know we cycled 61 miles from Manchester to Blackpool to help raise money for The Christie charity?
A social enterprise with a vision to encourage commuters to cycle rather than drive. By enabling commuters to take a step away from their car and onto a bicycle the Green Commute Initiative will help to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals as well as reducing the environmental impact of cars such as pollution and congestion.
Cycling is a great and easy way to become more active. It can be done by people of all ages and from all walks of life, and incorporating it into your commuting routine can be a relatively easy transition (as long as you’re okay with an earlier start to the day!). According to the NHS regular cycling can help to reduce the risk of chronic illnesses such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and strokes. Cycling and other exercise can also help boost your mood through the release of serotonin which improves mental health and wellbeing.
A major concern for the environment is global warming. If more of us could change our commute from a car to a bike, it would help to reduce carbon emissions which are believed to contribute towards global warming.
Cycling will also help to reduce air pollutants which are a threat to health. According to London Cycling Campaign the majority of vehicles are the main source of 7 out of 8 major pollutants, which the government is trying to reduce.
In addition to reducing air pollutants, cycling will also help reduce noise pollution, traffic congestion and will reduce the impacts that pollution has on green spaces, monuments and buildings.
When you’re cycling it’s important you practise safe cycling. Here’s a few tips for you:
The Green Commute Initiative is allowing us to become fitter and healthier as a company as well as being more eco-friendly and we will continue to encourage our employees and any other employees and businesses to take part in Green Commute Initiative – you won’t regret it!
