In the past few decades, the construction business has experienced a shift from the paper-based method of service delivery to electronic. The use of I.T. systems in quantity surveying has become intrinsic to the job role. In most developed countries, failure to use technology during construction would put you at an inconceivable disadvantage against other quantity surveyors.
The construction industry woke up to the reality of integrating computers into its processes as early as 1980. Professionals in developed economies have shown commitments to the adoption of technology in their industry, and over the years, it has brought tremendous benefits. In the early days, computers advanced standard processes such as cash flow forecasting, project management, accounting, and cost control. But, there were very few specialist computer programmes for single roles within the construction industry.
More recently, advancements in cloud computing have turned construction sites into offices, allowing for more accurate estimates made on site. It has also led to considerable increases in efficiency and the resultant cost savings. Technology has led to faster construction projects and increased client satisfaction. But, on top of this, there has been the development of specialist computer software, like BIM, to help with specific roles.
It is likely that the computer programmes and processes we already use will continue to be improved and developed. The high uptake and constant improvements made in technology in the UK are unsurprising. Our lives are becoming more and more reliant on technology, within and outside of construction. This information is not new to anyone working within the construction industry. You will have witnessed technology’s ability to improve efficiency, accuracy, and reliability first hand. What is more interesting, is how this technology can change the face of construction in less developed states.
Research has shown that less developed nations are less ready and committed to taking up new technology within construction. This means that the transition from a paper-based construction industry to a digital one is happening at a much slower rate than what previously occurred in the UK. This doesn’t mean it isn’t happening at all. For example, one study showed that in Nigeria most quantity surveyors were completely computer literate and used computers in their work. However, almost all of these quantity surveyors did not make full use of the software or processes available. It became apparent that they were reluctant to use technology due to a significantly high rate of cyber-crime that occurred, in which large amounts of data is lost, and clients were left dissatisfied.
While this case cannot be extrapolated to every country that is beginning to integrate more technology into their industries, it could be used as an example of how improved technology can benefit the construction industry not only within the UK. Better technology in the form of cybersecurity could allow for exponential growth in technology uptake. Then construction specific software and processes will go towards improving efficiency, productivity, and improved cost savings, all helping to increase profits. This will have the same benefits in less developed countries as it has in developed ones. However, the effects are likely to be much more beneficial.
Due to high birth rates, and a desire for improved standards of living, developing countries are beginning to contribute more and more to global carbon emissions. Better efficiency in construction through the use of technology will lead to the faster building of homes, hospitals, schools, and other structures. This will be part of the move towards a better quality of life for many people. It will also lead to higher efficiency and less carbon-intensive processes, helping to keep the impact on the plant to a minimum. And, it will also improve the economy as more projects are completed, with higher values to clients. This will bring further prosperity.
