Inscape was appointed by Wates Construction to install washroom packages at St John Fisher High School, a thriving institution that serves more than 1,000 young people in Wigan.
It is the sixth school project in the North West that is part of the Department for Education’s 10-year School Rebuilding Programme, which aims to carry out major rebuilding and refurbishment projects at 500 schools and sixth-form colleges across England.
Plans were approved to replace the existing school, which sits on a six-acre site off Baytree Road, and build a modern 91,000 sq ft facility.
Honoring the school’s Catholic heritage, the new St John Fisher will include a chapel featuring stained glass repurposed from a decommissioned church in Liverpool. The development will also include a three-story main teaching building and a 12,400 sq ft sports block. This will include a sports hall, fitness studio, activity studio and changing rooms.
The school has been designed to operate as a net-zero carbon facility, incorporating advanced technologies to enhance its sustainability. These features include air source heat pumps, low-flow taps and showers, and solar panels.
By integrating these technologies alongside a fabric-first approach, the school is designed to achieve the DFE’s reduced energy consumption target for secondary schools, lowering it from 75 kWh/m² to 55 kWh/m2.
Spread across four buildings on the site which were all in need of replacement, the school continues to play a large part in the community and has gone on to produce star athletes including international rugby star Owen Farrell.
We have collaborated with Wates Construction on numerous DFE Frameworks over the years. Once again, we were appointed as a trusted supply chain partner, delivering DFE-compliant Cubicles, IPS Systems, and Vanity Units.
Our offices are located less than 10 miles from the site, reducing our carbon footprint and promoting environmental sustainability.
Beyond the ecological benefits, this project held special significance for our team, as two of our directors and several staff members were born and reside in Wigan, including one manager who lives right next door to the school.
